In the last 10 years we have learnt a lot from the Royal Commissions including that churches are not necessarily safe places. By improving what we do and how we do it, we will have a much better chance of members and visitors feeling safe. If they feel safe, they are much more likely to build a sense of belonging and be open to receiving the precious message of the Gospel. Helping people feel safe is part of living our faith. This is an important starting point.

The value of the dedicated work of our volunteers is unquestionable. That value is increased when we clearly demonstrate to our communities that we care, and maintaining currency of background screening checks is an easy way of starting to build and reinforce the trust of our communities. Volunteers do their work to help others. Background screening also exists to help others.

The LCA is not alone in requiring background screening of its workers – both paid and volunteer. It is a community and government expectation for any person working in a position of trust. It helps to demonstrate best practice. The check required is no longer a “Police Check” but is a Working with Children Check (WWCC), even if members are not working directly with children. This requirement is not focused on particular individuals but is something that we all willingly do to be part of a team. It’s an easy process and we are here to assist members.

Please continue to encourage your volunteers in what they do and promote the value of best practice.

Training

Among many things, all volunteers and workers, paid and unpaid, must undertake
Child Safe Training.... there is NO way out... "If you are an elder, council member, work in the OP Shop or are a Sunday School teacher, you HAVE TO do this training."

You can view it as an imposition, and dig your heels in and buck the system, as I was tempted to do, or in the interests of consistency, and clarity, get into it as soon as possible, as I eventually did. Better to "get it over and done with, I thought".

There is a session being offered, at Salisbury Lutheran on 13th August. For more information and to register, click on the relevant button below.

Other times are available, near the bottom of this LCA webpage... click on  (SA-NZ)

A session at St Peters will be 10th September. To register for this drop a note in Colleen's pigeon hole, or give her a call.

If you cannot participate at one of these prearranged sessions, you may do the training online. You need a computer. The advantages of doing it this way are, that you can choose when you do it, and you can stop and start. You can get as many coffees as you like, to support you along the way. I did it over several nights. The disadvantages, are that you need to be at least "middling" at navigating your way through an online program like this. It is a mix of watching videos... which thankfully, have a text script below for you to read; multiple choice questions; and text boxes for typing your ideas and understandings as text. Edith is at the end of 0428846219 to support and encourage...

Click below to register for the Level 1 Online training.
Colleen, has a record of who has participated, who must participate and renewal dates.
I heard from Colleen that a number of people did a course in the past, which has now to be repeated as Level 1, because it has changed so much.

Working with Children Check or WWCC, is obligatory also.

Please fill in a form that looks like this, at back of church, and give to Tony Zimmermann; or print yourself and fill in and give it to Tony, as soon as possible. If you do not have an email address, use the following, stpeters.elizabeth.sa@lca.org.au in the space that asks you for your email.
After some time, (may be up to 6 weeks) you will be asked for id information... you know the 100 points stuff.... drivers licence; passport; medicare card... etc ? to bring to church to show, Tony, or whoever is appointed as the info gathering person. That person will have to sight and authorise...so that the next step can be undertaken by the authorities.  You will be informed when this is required.
