By improving what we do and how we do it, we will have a much better chance of members and visitors feeling safe. If they feel safe, they are much more likely to build a sense of belonging and be open to receiving the precious message of the Gospel. Helping people feel and to be safe is part of living our faith. This is an important starting point.
The value of the dedicated work of our volunteers is unquestionable. That value is increased when we clearly demonstrate to our communities that we care, and maintaining currency of background screening checks is an easy way of starting to build and reinforce the trust of our communities. Volunteers do their work to help others. Background screening also exists to help others.
The LCA is not alone in requiring background screening of its workers – both paid and volunteer. It is a community and government expectation for any person working in a position of trust. It helps to demonstrate best practice. The check is a Working with Children Check (WWCC), even if members are not working directly with children. This requirement is not focused on particular individuals but is something that we all willingly do to be part of a team. It’s an easy process and we are here to assist members.
Please continue to encourage your volunteers in what they do and promote the value of best practice.
